Google Ads Quality Score 2026: What It Is and How to Improve It
What Is Quality Score?
Quality Score is Google's rating of the quality and relevance of your keywords, ads and landing pages. It's measured on a 1–10 scale per keyword. Crucially, it's not just a vanity metric — it directly affects your Ad Rank and the price you pay per click.
The formula: Ad Rank = Max CPC Bid × Quality Score × Expected impact of ad extensions. This means a high Quality Score can allow you to outrank competitors with larger budgets while paying less per click — a double win.
The 3 Components
1. Expected Click-Through Rate (CTR)
Google predicts the likelihood that your ad will be clicked when shown for a particular keyword, compared to similar advertisers. This is based on historical performance of the keyword in your account and across all Google accounts. To improve it: write compelling headlines that directly match search intent, use numbers and specifics ("Save 30%", "Free consultation"), add strong CTAs and continually A/B test ad copy.
2. Ad Relevance
How closely your ad copy matches the intent of the keywords in the ad group. This is where tight keyword grouping (SKAGs or tightly themed ad groups) makes a huge difference. Each ad group should contain keywords with near-identical intent, and your headlines should mirror those keywords naturally.
3. Landing Page Experience
Google evaluates whether your landing page is relevant, trustworthy and user-friendly. Key factors: message match between ad and page (the headline on the landing page should reflect the ad), page load speed (especially on mobile), clear and useful content, easy navigation and absence of deceptive practices.
Score Interpretation
| Score | Status | CPC Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Below Average | CPC premium up to +400% |
| 4–6 | Average | Near market rate |
| 7–8 | Above Average | CPC discount ~20–30% |
| 9–10 | Excellent | CPC discount up to 50% |
Improvement Tactics for 2026
- Restructure ad groups: Keep each ad group to 5–15 tightly related keywords. One theme per ad group ensures relevance.
- Use Responsive Search Ads (RSAs): Provide 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. Google tests combinations and surfaces the best-performing versions.
- Pin your primary keyword: Pin your main keyword phrase to Headline 1 to guarantee relevance for high-volume terms.
- Optimize landing page speed: Aim for sub-2-second load times on mobile. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to identify issues.
- Match landing page content to ad: If your ad promises "Free SEO Audit", the landing page headline must say "Get Your Free SEO Audit".
- Pause low-performing keywords: Keywords with QS 1–3 after 1,000+ impressions should be paused or reworked — they drag down account health.
💡 2026 Update: AI-Powered Ad Strength
Google has introduced "Ad Strength" as a complement to Quality Score for RSAs. While QS is keyword-level, Ad Strength is ad-level. Aim for "Excellent" Ad Strength alongside a high QS for maximum performance.
Common Mistakes
- Bidding on broad keywords in the same ad group as exact match keywords — the relevance signals conflict.
- Sending all traffic to the homepage instead of a dedicated, relevant landing page.
- Never testing new ad copy — if your CTR stagnates, QS stagnates.
- Ignoring mobile experience — over 60% of Google searches happen on mobile in Turkey.
